Dental crowns earned their name because they cover the visible portion of the tooth and hold the remaining tooth structure together. At Seaman Family Dentistry, we offer porcelain dental crowns in Lenexa, Kansas, so that our patients can enjoy durable, aesthetic smiles. If you prefer a gold crown, we can accommodate your request.
You may need a dental crown if:
- A large old filling needs to be replaced
- Most of a tooth is decayed with less than 50% of healthy tooth remaining after removal
- A tooth is chipped or broken
- A tooth is cracked
- A tooth has had a root canal performed
- You want to change the shape or color of a tooth
- You want to make a crooked tooth appear straight
- You have received a dental implant post
Receiving a dental crown requires two visits to our office. At your first visit, our dentist will remove any decay and old filling material, and then the tooth will be shaped for the crown. An impression of the tooth is taken (which is sent to the lab to build your crown), and a temporary crown will be made and placed. Then, in a couple weeks, you will return to have the temporary one removed, and your new crown will be fitted and cemented permanently.
Dental crowns can last a long time if you keep up with your routine dental visits and practice good homecare. At our office, we provide you with a five-year guarantee on our dental crowns, provided you continue to receive regular preventive care (examinations and professional cleanings). After all, your natural tooth is under the crown, so you do need to keep the plaque and bacteria off of your teeth, so that it does not work its way below your gum line and start decaying your tooth under the crown.
Before and After
FAQ
What is a dental crown, and when is it needed?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged, decayed or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size and function while protecting it from further harm. Our experienced dentist may recommend a crown if a tooth is severely decayed, cracked or has undergone a root canal. Crowns are also used to enhance the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth.
What materials are used to make dental crowns?
Dental crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal and composite resin. Porcelain and ceramic are popular choices for their natural appearance, while metal crowns are known for their durability. Our dentist will discuss your options and recommend a material based on your aesthetic goals, bite strength and the tooth’s location.
How is a dental crown placed?
The process of placing a crown typically involves two visits. During the first visit, Dr. Seaman will prepare the tooth by removing decay or damaged tissue and shaping it to fit the crown. An impression is then taken to create a custom crown. At the second visit, the crown is cemented into place, providing a secure and natural-looking restoration.
How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care, dental crowns can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Longevity depends on factors such as the material used, oral hygiene practices and habits like grinding or clenching teeth. Dr. Seaman provides guidance on maintaining your crown and may suggest a night guard if grinding is an issue.
Are dental crowns noticeable?
Modern dental crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Porcelain and ceramic crowns, in particular, are color-matched to your surrounding teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable. Our dentist will take great care to ensure that your crown not only restores function but also enhances the overall appearance of your smile.
